Public Awareness

Federal regulations require that each gas system have in place a written public awareness plan meeting the requirements of API Recommended Practice 1162.   Among other items, your plan must specify how you will target four specific audiences for gas safety messages:

  • People living near distribution lines (both customers and non-customers)
  • Government officials
  • Emergency responders
  • Excavators

At the 2005 IMGA Annual Meeting, John Erickson of the American Public Gas Association (APGA) made a presentation on RP 1162.  A copy of that presentation can be found by clicking on the link below:

The APGA has also made available a model Public Awareness Plan and Worksheet for use of IMGA members, which can be downloaded by clicking on the links below:

IMGA has prepared three newspaper ads and a letter to local officials which may be used to meet the requirements of your Public Awareness Plan.  The materials combine the basic safety messages required by RP 1162 with messages regarding the heating value and cost effectiveness of gas heat.  IMGA staff will be happy to personalize any of the ads for use in your community.

Other sample materials are available at the APGA web site:  www.apga.org.
